Raqs Sharqi - the root of 'bellydance'

This clip (pardon the quality) of 'Tito' is the best I have found to convey the traditional root of what we now know as 'bellydance'. The dancing and the costuming, yes all covered up with only a hip scarf for emphasis, is true to form. As is the fact that a male is dancing...

Belly dancing (Arabic:raqs al sharqiرقص شرقي) is based on one of the oldest social dances in world history. There are two forms: the 1st is called Raqs Baladi, a social dance performed for fun & celebration by men and women of all ages, usually during festive occasions such as weddings and other social gatherings. The 2nd form, a more theatrical version, is called Raqs Sharqi. Like Raqs Baladi, Raqs Sharqi is performed by both male and female dancers.
