I used to pass restaurants at 247 Lavender Hill regularly and like most locals quietly place a bet on how long, or short to be precise, the newest incarnation in that spot would be there.
The space is large and quite brilliant but none of the previous restaurants in it had managed to stay there for even a year. It was one of those tricky spaces that was away from the main drag and needed to really give its clientele a reason to walk further up Lavender Hill while passing other bars and clubs to get there.
All that changed with the arrival of Sugar Cane in late 2007. What a brilliant addition to London restaurant bar lounge culture it is that I regularly make trips to it all year round. It is testament to how good Sugar Cane is that where others didn’t succeed they have gone from strength to strength.
The Tiki inspired interior is intimate, warm but not pretentious. The bar staff are real cool, relaxed, chilled and friendly. The cocktails are nicely priced and more importantly well presented and seriously good. They do great food and the clientele that fill Sugar Cane are good looking, sociable and the types of people you want to meet on a night out.
I always feel like I’ve been spoilt when I leave Sugar Cane. Places like this are what real grown up sexy nights out and great summers were designed for. I absolutely salute Sugar Cane. Don’t just take my word. Go! Experience it!
